Syrian Diplomat: Iran Ties Above Strategic Partnership

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad highlighted the strong bonds his country has formed with Iran, saying the bilateral relations have now surpassed a strategic status.

Bilateral relations between Syria and Iran have gone beyond a strategic level and have turned into a “decisive relationship,” Mekdad said at a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari, held in Damascus on Wednesday.

He also described the Syrian Army’s success to recapture the city of Aleppo from terrorists as a historic victory for both Syria and its allies, expressing gratitude to Iran for its unwavering support for the Syrian nation in the war against terrorism.

Jaberi Ansari, for his part, hailed the liberation of Aleppo as a major development and a result of resistance that the Syrian government, nation and their allies exercised in their fight against terrorism.

Apart from the military victories against terrorist groups, the humanitarian and political dimensions of the crisis in Syria must be taken into account, he underlined.

The Syrian army retook the northwestern city of Aleppo from the terrorist groups last week after a four-year battle.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), controlling parts of it.
