Syria-Syria Talks Best Solution to Syrian Crisis: Iranian Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A special aide to Iran’s parliament speaker reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s continued support for the Syrian government and nation in the fight against terrorism, stressing that Syria-Syria talks would be the best way to resolve the ongoing crisis in the Arab country.
We believe that the recent peace talks on Syria in Kazakhstan proved terrorists’ desperation and inability to continue their moves, Director General of International Affairs at the Iranian Parliament Hossein Amir Abdollahian told reporters after a meeting with Syrian Parliament Speaker Hadiya Khalaf Abbas in Damascus on Wednesday.
He added that “constructive Syria-Syria dialogue” could be the best solution to the Arab country’s crisis.
The talks in Kazakhstan were held on January 23-24 with the participation of a number of delegations, including armed opposition, Syria, Iran, Russia and Turkey.
Iran, Russia, and Turkey issued a joint statement at the end of the peace talks on Tuesday, reiterating that there is no military solution to the Syrian war and that only a political process can resolve the crisis.
Amir Abdollahian further said Iran will vigorously continue with its all-out support for the Syrian Arab Republic in its anti-terror fight until the crisis in the country is resolved through a political process.
Abbas, for her part, thanked Iran for its unwavering support for the Syrian government and nation in their fight against terrorism, saying that the Arab country will never forget the Islamic Republic’s help and support.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
