Iran’s Zarif Calls for ‘Impartial’ Probe into Chemical Attack in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed the need to launch an “impartial inquiry” into a recent suspected chemical attack in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province, which led to a unilateral move by the US to attack the Arab country.

"World is still paying for last impetuous unilateralism based on self-serving allegations," Zarif said on his twitter account late on Sunday, referring to the US missile attack on a Syrian airbase in Homs province which was lunched under the pretext of the chemical attack in Idlib.

“Impartial inquiry about April 4 tragedy essential,” the Iranian top diplomat noted.

The US military attacked the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with 59 Tomahawk missiles on Friday.

Officially announcing the strike, US President Donald Trump claimed that the targeted airfield had launched the chemical attack on the rebel-held area in Idlib.

On Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the country’s armed forces "did not and will not" use chemical weapons, even against extremist groups.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
