Syria Army Repels Al-Nusra Attack on Quneitra

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies foiled a major attack by the Jabhat Fatah al-Sham terrorist group (also known as al-Nusra Front) in the southwestern city of Quneitra, inflicting major losses on them.

On Saturday, the al-Nusra terrorists, backed by Israeli warplanes, launched an attack against nearby areas of al-Baath city in Quenitra province but were pushed back by the Syrian forces, SANA news agency reported.

During the counterattack, Israeli jets pounded the civilian areas in the city, leaving dozens of people dead and injured.

Earlier, the Syrian government forces thwarted another attack by the Takfiri militant group in the area of Jawalak-al-Mahatta-Sensil in the eastern countryside of Homs.

Over the past six years, Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August 2016 that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.
