New US Sanctions to Endanger JCPOA Implementation: Iranian Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the US congressional bill on new sanctions against Tehran would jeopardize the implementation process of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
In a statement released on Wednesday, Qassemi condemned the new measure approved by the US Congress against Iran as “an illegal and insulting act”.
“By approving these non-nuclear sanctions, and in case it (the bill) is finalized and implemented, the US House of Representatives will overlook and endanger the successful implementation of the JCPOA, which is a multilateral and international agreement and the outcome of several years of efforts,” he said.
The spokesman further pointed to the long-standing record of anti-Iran measures adopted by the US Congress, saying, notwithstanding, the US has some obligations under the JCPOA and must fulfill them.
The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives passed a sweeping package of bills on Iran, Russia, and North Korea sanctions Tuesday in a 419-3 vote, sending the legislation to the Senate for almost certain passage and likely making it veto-proof.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
