Defense Minister Nominee Vows to Boost Iran’s Missile Might

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President Hassan Rouhani’s pick for the post of defense minister pledged to continue to enhance Iran’s missile capabilities if he qualifies for the post.

“Enhancing the country’s missile and cruise power as well as air defense systems will be top on the agenda of the Defense Ministry in the next four years,” Brigadier General Amir Hatami said on Thursday in an open session of the parliament while outlining his plans for the ministry.

Referring to enemy attempts to undermine Iran’s security in the region and isolate it through striking hugely expensive arms deal, he said that the Islamic Republic has achieved high defense deterrence power and this has been acknowledged by the enemies.

“Many of the governments (which pioneered sanctions against Iran) are now trying to develop cooperation with Iran,” he said.

Brigadier General Hatami further stressed that the country would continue to boost its missile and defense capabilities to counter any potential threat.

Iranian lawmakers will continue debates on the credentials and backgrounds of the proposed ministers on Saturday.
