Iranian, Azeri Presidents Discuss Bilateral Ties, Threat of Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyef explored avenues for further expansion of relations between the two neighboring countries, and stressed the necessity to root out terrorism in the region.

At the meeting held on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, President Rouhani lauded friendly relations between the two neighboring countries, and said the ties are amicable and developing.

As regards expansion of mutual cooperation, Rouhani noted, "The two countries have ample potentials for developing ties in economy, science, technology, research and trade and these potentials must be tapped to serve both nations".

He further attached great weight to completing joint rail project as beneficial for the entire region.

Referring to terrorism as a regional and global issue, the Iranian president said, "Terrorism in the region is facing failure and to root it out, intelligence, economic and cultural cooperation should be emphasized more than before."

Also at the meeting, Aliyev, for his part, described Rouhani's re-election as the proof of people's trust in the administration's plans and programmes.

Pointed to the latest status of bilateral ties, he noted, "Relations between the two countries are currently at the highest and friendliest level. Nine visits by the presidents of the two countries in the past four years has had positive effects on Tehran-Baku ties and I am confident that the future relations will be better than today".

As regards terrorism, Aliyev said, "Azerbaijan considers terrorism a common threat to all countries of the region and we are willing to cooperate and collaborate more with Iran in dealing this scourge."

He also said that Baku was willing to improve its relations with Tehran and also stressed the development of North-South Corridor
