Trump Is A ‘Liar’, Iran’s Shamkhani Says
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani described US President Donald Trump as a “liar”, saying that Washington continues to support terrorism in Iraq and Syria and then Trump calls Iran a “terrorist nation”.
“Unfortunately, Trump is a liar. The US imposes sanctions on Iran, supports the growth of terrorism in Iraq and Syria, and bombards Yemen,” Shamkhani told Euronews on Wednesday.
“When Trump calls Iran 'The Terrorist Nation', or distorts the 2,500 years of history the 'Persian Gulf' has, by calling it the 'Arabian Gulf', people realize that they are being targeted,” he added.
On the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and the role of Europe, the top Iranian official said, “It has always been our plan to develop our ties and relations with Europe within our values and beliefs. However, the truth is that Europe has not done the same since the nuclear deal was signed.”
“It has mainly paid lip service, with a few exceptions. It is now stating that it is against the elimination of the nuclear deal by the US,” Shamkhani added.
After months of anticipation, Trump on Friday said his administration “cannot and will not” certify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA to Congress, as he set out a new strategy for dealing with Iran.
He also said that his new strategy begins with imposing tough sanctions on the IRGC, accusing Iran of “proliferation of missiles and weapons that threaten its neighbor's global trade and freedom of navigation.”
In a televised address to the nation later in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blasted the comments by Trump, reiterating that the Iranian nation will not surrender to such “false statements and hate speech.”
