Zarif Lambasts US Fake Sympathy for Iranians
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif took a swipe at US authorities for their “faux sympathy” for the Iranian nation, saying Washington had better stop rehashing the fake expression of support for the Iranian people.
“US changed one elected govt (government) in Iran— in 1953. It has tried a repeat since 79. Iranians not fooled by US game & unmoved by fake sympathy,” the top Iranian diplomat said in a post on his Twitter account on Thursday.
“Faux sympathy for Iranians belied by Trump’s use of fake name for Persian Gulf, calling them terrorist nation & banning them from visiting,” he added.
He also recommended US officials to “lose the ‘standing with the Iranian people’ mantra.”
“They (Iranians) elected their president w/ (with) 6 million more popular votes & 73% turnout. Compare?” he tweeted.
In mid-October, US President Donald Trump unveiled his new strategy for Iran, accusing Tehran of backing terrorism and proliferation of weapons. But he also said the US stands “in total solidarity” with the Iranian people. Elsewhere in his comments, Trump used the word Arabian to refer to the Persian Gulf, and even accused Iran of violating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has explicitly verified Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA in eight successive reports.
