Bahraini Court Sentences 19 Citizens to Years in Prison

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bahrain's highest court handed down long term prison sentences to 19 people over a range of allegations, as the Al Khalifah regime presses ahead with its crackdown on critics.

According to Jordan News Agency, the Bahrain’s high court sentenced eight of them to life imprisonment, nine of them to 15 years in jail and two of them to 10 years in prison and paying 100,000 Bahraini dinars in fines.

Also, the Bahraini court revoked citizenship of 15 of them.

It accused these Shiite citizens of forming a secret cell, cooperation with a foreign country and receiving money from it.

The court claimed that the convicts have established a cell to distribute statements among people and provoke them into using force for regime change and reviving the Bahrain's Al Wafa Movement.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
