Iranian, Turkish Diplomats Discuss Syria Peace Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior Iranian and Turkish diplomats held talks in Ankara to make preparations for the expert-level meetings prior to a new round of trilateral summit of Tehran, Ankara, and Moscow about the Syrian crisis, due to be held in Russia next week.

As the new round of expert-level meetings on Syria will be held in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari and Undersecretary of Turkey’s Foreign Ministry Umit Yalcın met in Ankara on Friday for preparatory talks.

The Iranian diplomat also met Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal, who has led the Turkish delegation in Astana negotiations, in Ankara on Friday.

The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and Turkey also plan to meet in the Turkish city of Antalya on Sunday on the Syrian crises. The trilateral summit of the three countries will also be held in the Russian city of Sochi on Wednesday.

The 7th round of Syria peace talks brokered by Iran, Russia, and Turkey was held in Astana on October 30 and 31.

The fourth edition of the talks in May produced a memorandum of understanding on de-escalation zones in Syria, sharply reducing fighting in the country.

Diplomatic efforts to end fighting in Syria gained momentum in 2017 with the announcement of a ceasefire in the Arab country in early January.
