Iranian Diplomat Discusses Yemen with Europeans
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs met senior European diplomats in Italy’s Rome for talks about the crisis in Yemen and the ways to alleviate the suffering of people hit by a Saudi-led war.
During his visit to Rome on Thursday, Iranian diplomat Hossein Jaberi Ansari held a meeting with Secretary General of European External Action Service (EEAS) Helga Maria Schmid and with political and security director generals of the foreign ministries of Italy, Germany, France and Britain.
The talks revolved around the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Yemen and the need to take trust-building steps to resolve the crisis.
It was the second round of diplomatic talks on Yemen, followed by a series of meetings on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference back in February.
The third round is slated for the second half of June, to be hosted by the European Union at its headquarters in Brussels.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement in order to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have died in the military campaign.
