Iran’s President Condoles with Indonesia over Tsunami

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed condolences to Indonesia over a fatal tsunami that has claimed more than 280 lives so far.

In a letter of condolence to his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo on Monday, President Rouhani expressed his sympathy with the Southeast Asian government and nation over the devastating tsunami along the Sunda Strait.

The text of the Iranian president’s letter is as follows, according to his official website:

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Your Excellency Mr. Joko Widodo,

President of the Republic of Indonesia,

The saddening news of tsunami in Sunda Strait that claimed hundreds of lives on Indonesian citizens, injuring hundreds more, caused great grief and deep sorrow.

I hereby offer the sincerest condolences of the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Your Excellency and the Indonesian government and nation, pray for the dead and wish their bereaved families patience.

Hassan Rouhani

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran”

Indonesia’s rescue workers have stepped up efforts to reach many areas devastated by the deadly tsunami.

As doctors worked to help survivors and hundreds of people searched on debris-strewn beaches along the Sunda Strait for more victims, Indonesian officials said on Monday morning that the death toll had risen to at least 281, with 1,016 injured.

Dozens are missing from the disaster areas along the coastlines of western Java and southern Sumatra islands. The numbers could increase once authorities hear from all stricken areas.
