TEHRAN (Tasnim) - At least four people were killed and more than 300 wounded after two passenger trains collided with each other in a horror crash in Pretoria, South Africa.

Rescuers were working to free people who were trapped in the wreckage.

Around 800 people were on board the trains when the crash happened at Mountain View station in Pretoria, South Africa.

An emergency services official told local media that two people have been confirmed dead and more than 100 have been injured, the Mirror reported.

At least two people were still trapped on board one of the trains.

One person was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition, said Netcare911, a land and air ambulance service.

There were scenes of chaos after the collision happened during the morning commute on Tuesday, just before 10am.

Carriages from both trains had derailed and a number of injured people lay on the ground waiting for help.

One victim lay partially underneath a derailed train carriage as they were helped by rescuers.

The station's platform looked like a makeshift field hospital as injured passengers were treated and others lay waiting to be seen.

A Pretoria police officer told Times Live: "At the moment it appears that two people are dead, with a heck of a lot more badly injured. "

The unnamed officer added: "Emergency services are trying to reach the injured who are trapped inside the carriages."

Journalist Yusuf Abramjee, who tweeted photos and video, spoke to an eyewitness who told how she was left shaken by the noise and scenes of the injured.

She said: "Bam, it was a big sound.”
