Top Azeri Diplomat in Tehran for Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Saturday.

Heading a diplomatic delegation, Mammadyarov met Zarif at Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday morning.

In the gathering, the two delegations discussed ways to broaden Tehran-Baku economic ties and also talked about major regional and international developments.

The senior Azeri diplomat is also going to hold a meeting with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

On Thursday, an Azeri delegation led by Minister of Economic Development Shahin Mustafayev met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran, during which the president reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to promote cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan and described the South-North railroad project as a manifestation of worthwhile cooperation between the two neighbors.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev has made several official visits to Tehran over the past few years.

In one of the trips in 2016, the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.
