Persepolis, Sepahan Remain in IPL Title Race
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Persepolis and Sepahan football teams were held against their rivals in their penultimate game of the Iran Professional League (IPL) season.
Persepolis failed to beat Machine Sazi in front of its home crowd at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
Branko Ivankovic’s team drew 1-1 with Machine Sazi. Scottish forward Jai Quitongo gave the visiting team the lead in the 16th minute but Ali Alipour canceled out his goal from the penalty spot with nine minutes remaining.
Padideh and Sepahan shared the spoils in Mashhad. Amin Ghaseminejhad put the host into the lead form the penalty spot just five minutes into the match. Ali Ghorbani headed the ball into the goal in the 53rd minute.
Esteghlal was held to a goalless draw by Sanat Naft in Abadan, Tractor Sazi drew 1-1 with Pars Jonoubi in Tabriz, Sepidrood lost to Nassaji 3-1 in Rasht, Zob Ahan defeated Foolad 3-1 in Isfahan, Saipa defeated relegated Esteghlal Khuzestan 2-1 in Ahvaz and Paykan edged past Naft Masjed Soleyman 1-0 in Tehran.
Persepolis leads the IPL table with 58 points and Sepahan is second with 55 points but with a better goal difference.
On Thursday, the champion of the 18th edition of the Iran Professional League will be decided.
