Iranian, Iraqi Diplomats Hold Political Talks in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi and his Iraqi counterpart Nizar al-Khairallah met in Tehran for a new round of political negotiations between the two Muslim neighbors.

The meeting was held on Wednesday, as part of regular political consultations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Iraq, and within the framework of the two countries’ political committee.

The two sides discussed different issues of mutual interest, and emphasized the necessity for constant consultations between Iran and Iraq under the current regional conditions.

The Iranian official thanked Iraq for its clear and constructive view in support of Iran’s stances, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

Pointing to Washington’s economic war against Iran, Araqchi described the US measures as the root cause of regional tensions, saying, “Iran will stand against the bullying measures.”

In March, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Iraq with a high-ranking delegation at the official invitation of the Iraqi government. It was Rouhani’s first official visit to the Arab country during his tenure.

The two countries hold regular meetings to discuss regional issues, common challenges, fight against terrorism and ways to promote security, stability and economic cooperation in the region.
