Iranian Academics Urge Support for Indian Muslims

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A group of university professors in Tehran called on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to take diplomatic action following a recent wave of violence and mob attacks that have killed dozens of Muslims in India.

In a letter to Zarif on Monday, a group of professors of universities in Tehran strongly deplored the anti-Muslim violence in India, saying gruesome footages of killing and torture of defenseless women, children and men have hurt the feelings of all freedom-seeking people in the world.

The signatories of the letter also lashed out at the White House for provoking the extremist Hindus and giving a green light to the anti-Muslim violence in India following a recent visit to New Delhi by the “racist US president”.

The academics called on the Iranian Foreign Ministry to employ the country’s international capacities against the cruel policy of sectarian and religious cleansing in India.

Meanwhile, a group of Iranian university and seminary students are organizing a protest in Tehran against the anti-Muslim violence in India.

The protest is going to be held in front of the Indian Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday at 2 pm local time.

Violence erupted in the Indian capital last Monday, leading to a three-day-long rampage, with Hindu mobs attacking Muslim homes, shops and mosques.

The attacks were carried out on protesters, who have been rallying against a new citizenship law, after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra threatened peaceful sit-ins would be removed from the streets.

The violence in Delhi killed at least 46 people, and injured hundreds.

It was the worst violence in Delhi since 1984, when more than 3,000 Sikh minority were killed following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
