Iranian MPs Donate A Fifth of Salaries for Coronavirus Relief
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian lawmakers pledged to donate twenty percent of their salaries next month to COVID-19 relief efforts, an MP said.
Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Abdolreza Mesri announced at the conclusion of an open session of the legislature on Wednesday that the lawmakers have decided to donate 20 percent of their salaries to the people affected by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
Many Iranian officials have taken part in nationwide schemes to provide relief aid for vulnerable social groups in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
A couple of days ago, commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) also announced they would donate 20 percent of their salaries to coronavirus relief efforts.
The spokesperson for the Iranian administration, Ali Rabiee, has warned that a long-term shutdown of businesses amid the coronavirus outbreak and the government’s non-intervention in the labor market policies could result in the unemployment of more than 4 million people in the country.
According to Rabiee, the outbreak of COVID-19 has directly harmed the activities of around 3.3 million official workforces and caused the closure of more than 1.5 million official and unofficial workshops across the country.
