Iran Welcomes Nagorno-Karabakh Truce
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian president’s chief of staff hailed a peace deal brokered by Russia that results in a ceasefire between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia after weeks of war in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the Russian mediation between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the acceptance of ceasefire by the two sides involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute,” Mahmoud Vaezi said in a post on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
Iran insists that the two warring sides must remain committed to respecting the international boundaries and protecting the civil rights of all groups, he added.
Vaezi further said that the decades-old dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh would be settled with a negotiated and political solution provided that Baku and Yerevan respect the international law, such as the territorial integrity of states, and the civil rights of the nationals.
Iran hails the termination of war in Nagorno-Karabakh and hopes that the ceasefire agreement would be implemented, the Iranian president’s chief of staff added.
Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Russia said they have signed a deal to end the military conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region after more than a month of bloodshed.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan first announced the signing on social media in the early hours of Tuesday and the Kremlin and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev later confirmed the news.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin said Russian peacekeepers would be deployed along the frontline in Nagorno-Karabakh and the corridor between the region and Armenia.
The truce calls for the deployment of nearly 2,000 Russian peacekeepers to the disputed enclave, where the Republic of Azerbaijan will receive significant territorial concessions from an Armenian-backed local government.
