Zarif Highlights Iraq’s ‘Pivotal’ Regional Role


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran welcomes Iraq’s pivotal role in the regional developments, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said after meetings with top Iraqi authorities.

In a post on is Twitter account on Tuesday, Zarif pointed to the fruitful meetings he has held during a visit to Baghdad.

The top Iranian diplomat said he had “excellent talks” with Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Parliament Speaker Mohammed Rikan Hadeed al-Halbousi, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and other senior Sunni and Shiite leaders of Iraq.

“We welcome Iraq's pivotal role in the region,” Zarif underlined.

The foreign minister also noted that he has emphasized in the meetings that “Iran's priority is its neighbors.”

Zarif also unveiled plans for more meetings in Baghdad and Erbil on Tuesday.
