Iran’s President Lambasts US for 20 Years of Silent Catastrophe in Afghanistan
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The US must be held accountable for the brazen violation of human rights in Afghanistan over the past two decades, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said, adding that Americans have upset security and calm wherever they went.
Addressing a cabinet session on Wednesday, Raisi described the developments of Afghanistan over the past two decades as a telling example of aggression and blatant violation of human rights in the contemporary era.
“If just the number of women and children who have been killed, injured or maimed in Afghanistan during these years is taken into account, we’ll realize what a silent catastrophe has been in progress in that country,” the Iranian president deplored.
The experience of the US presence in various parts of the world reveals that Americans have only disrupted security, stability and calm, Raisi stressed.
He lashed out at Washington for making various excuses and mounting propaganda campaigns against other countries instead of being held accountable before the world’s public opinion for its dark record and performance.
The president also noted that Iran has ready replies to the US government which raises accusations against Tehran under different pretexts, calling on the Iranian organizations, including the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, to present appropriate responses to such allegations.
In remarks on August 28, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei decried the role that the US foreign policy has had in creating tensions in Afghanistan, saying, “Behind the scenes of US foreign policy there lies a predatory wolf that sometimes changes into a cunning fox. Today’s situation in Afghanistan is an example of this.”
“Afghanistan is our brother country, with the same language, religion and culture. The source of all the crises in Afghanistan is the US. The US committed all sorts of atrocities during their 20-year occupation of that country. These ranged from bombing wedding and mourning ceremonies, to imprisoning individuals, and included increasing the production of addictive drugs by tens of times. They did not take a single step for the development of Afghanistan,” the Leader noted.
Explaining the position of the Islamic Republic on Afghanistan, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “We support the Afghan nation. Governments come and go. It is the Afghan nation that will remain. The nature of our relations with other governments depends on the nature of their relations with us. May God bring the best situation for the nation of Afghanistan.”
