Iran, Pakistan Discuss Joint Action against Terrorism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa weighed plans for cooperation between the two neighbors in the fight against terrorism.
The top Iranian diplomat and the senior Pakistani general held a meeting on the sidelines of an OIC conference in Islamabad on Sunday.
Hailing the cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad in border areas, Amirabdollahian described the two countries’ border security as appropriate. He also called for cooperation with Pakistan to further increase border security.
The Iranian foreign minister said fighting terrorism is an area of cooperation between Iran and Pakistan, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.
He then voiced Iran’s readiness to export electricity and gas to Pakistan given the capacities of the two countries in various fields of cooperation.
Amirabdollahian and General Bajwa then talked about the developments in Afghanistan.
The Iranian foreign minister said peace and security can only be restored to Afghanistan through the formation of an inclusive government representing all ethnic groups.
For his part, General Qamar Javed Bajwa extended his greetings to the high-ranking officials of Iran and said the cooperation between the two countries is based on neighborliness and brotherhood.
He described terrorism as a common enemy of Iran and Pakistan, stressing the need to activate a joint committee on border security given the need for boosting security along common borders as much as possible.
He also stressed the need for closer cooperation with Iran on the issues relating to Afghanistan, especially in the fight against terrorism.
