Act Rationally, Live Up to Commitments, Iran Tells US
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In order for the 2015 nuclear deal to recover, the US must behave reasonably and fulfill the commitments that it has mentioned in its indirect messages to Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.
Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Kanaani said Iran’s “clear message” is that it remains committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“Iran is committed to the JCPOA, provided that the American side also remains committed to the conditions and contents of the JCPOA,” he stated.
The spokesman also advised the US to act rationally, fulfill the commitments that it has undertaken in the messages sent via intermediaries, and return to the 2015 nuclear deal. “This is our clear and firm response to the American side.”
Kanaani also warned the US not to make the mistake of placing a bet on the internal developments of Iran.
“The Americans can return to the deal (JCPOA) and the negotiations within the agreed upon framework and the dimensions that have been emphasized in Vienna, but it appears that the Americans are still having a paradox. On the one hand, they have a look at their own political and domestic issues, and on the other hand, they keep half an eye on Iran’s internal developments and on supporting the riots,” the spokesman added.
He reminded the US that it cannot win concessions from Iran through intimidation and provocation.
“The road to an agreement is a bilateral road with commitment vis- -vis commitment,” he concluded.
In July 2015, Iran signed JCPOA with world powers, agreeing to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, former US president Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the agreement in May 2018 and re-imposed unilateral sanctions on Tehran, prompting the latter to abandon some of the pact's commitments.
The talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal began in Vienna in April 2021 but were suspended in March of this year due to political differences between Tehran and Washington.
The Iranian officials say Tehran needs strong guarantees that it can reap the economic benefits from the deal and the other party will not unilaterally withdraw from it again.
