Iranian FM Meets Iraqi President, PM in Baghdad

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian met separately with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to weigh plans for the expansion of relations between Tehran and Baghdad.

In the meeting with the Iraqi premier in Baghdad on Wednesday, Amirabdollahian stressed the need for Iraq to repay its debts to Iran, control the common border, and prevent provocative and threatening actions against its eastern neighbor.

He also called for the finalization of the document on comprehensive cooperation between Iran and Iraq.

For his part, Sudani lauded Iran’s unwavering support for Iraq, expressing his country’s readiness to carry out the agreements signed in the past.

He also pledged that Iraq will continue to play a role in the establishment of calm in the region and strengthening dialogue amid regional developments.

In his meeting with the president of Iraq, Amirabdollahian said the Iranian and Iraqi governments and nations enjoy specific and close ties.

Rashid, for his part, voiced the Arab country’s preparedness to promote cooperation with Iran in various fields.

Heading a diplomatic delegation, Amirabdollahian has visited Baghdad at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein.

Upon their arrival in Iraq on Tuesday night, the Iranian foreign minister and his entourage visited a memorial site near Baghdad airport built in commemoration of former commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Lt. General Qassem Soleimani.

General Soleimani was assassinated in a US strike on January 3, 2020, when he was on an official visit to Baghdad. Hitting his convoy, the barbaric assault also led to the martyrdom of many others, including Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, then deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) or Hashd al-Sha’abi anti-terror force.
