Four-Party Meeting on Syria to Be Held in Moscow, Says Turkish Defense Minister
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar announced on Monday that defense and intelligence chiefs from Turkey, Russia, Syria, and Iran will meet in Moscow on Tuesday.
Akar stated that the goal of the meeting is to find a solution to existing issues through talks and to ensure peace and tranquility in the region. "A number of positive events" are expected to follow the Moscow meeting, according to Akar, who did not provide further details.
The process of normalizing relations between Turkey and Syria began on December 28, 2022, with a meeting in Moscow between the Russian, Syrian, and Turkish defense ministers, who agreed to establish a joint trilateral commission.
The countries’ foreign ministers will hold consultations following these discussions, and will consider talks between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and Bashar al-Assad of Syria.
Erdogan suggested in mid-December 2022 that a trilateral meeting with Putin and Assad be organized, with discussions between the countries’ special services, defense and foreign ministers to precede the summit.
