Iran Seeking Self-Sufficiency in Producing Summer Crops

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The deputy head of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII) said that the country is making its utmost efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in production of fresh vegetables and summer crops.

Producing hybrid seeds of cucumber and pepper is finalized and the production would be unveiled within the next two weeks, Mehran Shariatpanah stated.

Speaking in an interview with FARS news agency on Saturday, he said the scientific process of producing hybrid seed of cucumber and pepper in the country has been finalized, production of which will be registered and announced in the next two weeks.

Stating that $100 million is annually spent for importing seeds of vegetables and summer crops from the world’s leading companies, Shariatpanah pointed out that the lack of hybrid seeds of vegetables and summer crops had created many problems in past years.

For this purpose, a working group has been set up with the participation and cooperation of the Execution of Imam Khomeini Order (EIKO) and Barakat Foundation to work in the field of achieving self-sufficiency in seeds of vegetables and summer crops, he stated.

A giant step has been taken in Iran’s agricultural sector to cut dependency on importing seeds of vegetables and summer crops, and Iran will soon become self-sufficient in their production, he added.
