Muslims Worldwide Protest Desecration of Quran in Sweden

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thousands of Muslims on Friday took to the streets in Iraq, Lebanon, and Iran, expressing their outrage at the desecration of the Quran in Sweden.

In Iran, hundreds gathered outside the Swedish embassy in Tehran on Friday to condemn the desecration of the Holy Quran in the Scandinavian country, the second such incident in less than a month.

Sweden's ambassadors have been summoned in various countries after a second event, where protesters reportedly kicked and partially damaged the holy book, was held in Stockholm.

In response to the demonstration, Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani recalled his country's charge d'affaires in Sweden while suspending the working permit of Swedish telecom company Ericsson on Iraqi soil.

Qatar also summoned Sweden's ambassador, urging Swedish authorities to take "all necessary measures to stop these shameful acts."

Saudi Arabia and Turkey both condemned the incident, with Turkey calling it a "despicable attack" and demanding that Sweden take decisive measures to prevent hate crimes against Islam.

The United Arab Emirates summoned the Swedish charge d'affaires to condemn the Swedish government's allowance of attacks on copies of the Quran.

Hezbollah leader, Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, called on Arab and Muslim countries to follow Iraq's lead and expel Swedish ambassadors, while urging demonstrations to be held after Friday prayers to show the world their commitment to protecting the Quran.

The demonstrations in several countries reflect the global concern over the desecration of Islam's holy book in Sweden.
