TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The speakers of the parliaments of Iran and Egypt weighed plans for the enhancement of relations between the two Muslim nations.

Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives Hanafy Ali El-Gebali held a meeting on the sidelines of the 9th Parliamentary Forum of BRICS in South Africa’s Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Describing Egypt as a major and influential Muslim state, the Iranian speaker stressed the need to promote cooperation among Islamic nations in West Asia and North Africa.

Qalibaf also noted that closer parliamentary interaction between Iran and Egypt will contribute to the sustainable development of relations among the Muslim nations and the settlement of regional problems.

There is a bright prospect for the enhancement of cooperation between Tehran and Cairo, the Iranian speaker added.

For his part, Gebali said the participation of Egypt and Iran in the BRICS forum indicates that the two countries are on the right track to strengthen cooperation.

He also invited the Iranian Parliament speaker to visit Cairo to discuss the ways to broaden relations between the two countries.

Last week, top diplomats from Iran and Egypt held what the Iranian Foreign Ministry described as “positive and fruitful” talks in New York to strengthen relations and fulfill the two countries’ mutual interests through constant dialogue.

In a meeting with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, held in Tehran in May, the Sultan of Oman pointed to Egypt’s willingness to resume relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In response, Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that Iran welcomes this position and has no problems in this regard.
