Venezuela Considers Storming of Mexican Embassy in Ecuador Barbaric: Foreign Ministry
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Venezuelan leadership called the storming of the Mexican embassy in Quito by Ecuadorian police to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was hiding there, a barbaric act.
"I have spoken on the phone with the Mexican Foreign Secretary Alicia Barcena and conveyed the absolute solidarity of the president (of Venezuela) Nicol·s Maduro to the president (of Mexico) Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the face of this barbaric act that violates all the principles of international law," Foreign Minister of Venezuela Yvan Gil Pinto wrote on his page on the social network X, TASS reported.
Honduran President Xiomara Castro also declared solidarity with Mexico. "The assault on the Mexican Embassy by the Government of Ecuador, with the aim of kidnapping former Vice President Jorge Glas, constitutes an intolerable act for the international community, given that it ignores the historical and fundamental right to asylum. We strongly reject this violation of the sovereignty of the Mexican State and international law. We stand in solidarity with the Mexican people and their president," she wrote on her page on the social network X.
On Friday night local time, the Ecuadorian police arrested Glas, who sought asylum in Mexico, after storming the country's embassy in Quito. Mexican diplomats were injured and the countries severed relations.
The Mexican authorities announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
