SNSC Overseeing Iran’s Nuclear Activities: Caretaker FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The caretaker foreign minister of Iran said Tehran is pressing on with its nuclear activities routinely under the Supreme National Security Council’s supervision.

Asked by reporters whether Ali Shamkhani, the former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has been put in charge of the nuclear case, Ali Baqeri said on Wednesday, “We have nothing known as a dossier in the nuclear issue.”

“The nuclear activities (of Iran) are in progress within the framework of the establishment’s tact under the supervision of the Supreme National Security Council,” he commented on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting.

Asked about Iran’s diplomatic endeavors and foreign policies after the loss of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the caretaker minister said, “The exchange of messages with the US continues as before and there has been no hiatus in this process.”

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage crashed in northwestern mountainous forests on May 19, killing the president, Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian, and six others.

In comments in September 2023, the late minister said if the US behaves genuinely with good intent, the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will be attainable.

The United States returned its sanctions against Iran in 2018 after leaving the JCPOA, an agreement between the Islamic Republic and world countries that would keep the bans lifted in exchange for some voluntary changes in Tehran's nuclear energy program.

Bowing under American pressure, the EU has been toeing the US's sanction line against Iran ever since Washington's departure from the deal.
