Russia Eyes Closer Regional Cooperation with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov voiced Moscow’s readiness for closer interaction with Iran on the regional issues, including the developments in the Caucasus.

In a meeting with the caretaker foreign minister of Iran, held on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting of the BRICS countries in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod on Monday, Lavrov paid tribute to the late Iranian president and foreign minister for their role in deepening relations between Tehran and Moscow.

Lavrov also said that Russia and Iran share views on many regional issues.

He expressed Russia’s readiness to continue and strengthen cooperation with Iran in the West Asia and the South Caucasus regions.

Hailing the growing ties between the two countries in various fields, Lavrov stressed the need for closer coordination to expedite the implementation of the joint projects.

Chaired by Lavrov, the two-day ministerial meeting of BRICS is attended by senior diplomats from the Friends of BRICS nations.

This is the first ministerial meeting of BRICS following the association’s extension in 2023.
