Syrians Vote in People’s Assembly Elections

The election, spanning all Syrian cities, is overseen by the Supreme Judicial Elections Committee, ensuring transparency from nomination to result announcement, according to the SANA news agency.

In total, 8,151 polling centers across government-controlled areas opened their doors to voters at 7:00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT), and will remain open until 7:00 p.m. (1600 GMT).

Judge Hussein al-Zaghir, head of the Judicial Sub-Committee for Elections, reported 275 polling stations in Aleppo, alongside designated centers for Raqqa and Quneitra provinces.

In Aleppo city, Judge Counselor Hassan Nasser confirmed 1105 polling stations equipped with necessary supplies. Similarly, Quneitra province saw 170 polling stations distributed across Damascus, its countryside, and Daraa.

President Bashar al-Assad and Prime Minister Hussein Arnous cast their votes in Damascus, emphasizing Syria's commitment to constitutional processes amidst challenging circumstances. Arnous highlighted the completion of all constitutional obligations, spanning multiple terms, enabling broad societal representation.

Looking ahead, Arnous expressed optimism for Syria's reconstruction phase, urging the elected council’s success in its forthcoming tasks. Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faisal Mekdad echoed this sentiment, viewing the elections as a testament to Syrian democracy’s resilience and the people’s trust in national leadership.

The Syrian parliamentary elections, known as the People's Assembly elections, occur every four years. The People's Assembly serves as Syria's legislative body, consisting of 250 members elected through a mixed electoral system.
