Rights Groups React to Biden's Decision to Cancel Re-Election Bid

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Rights groups and social media users have reacted strongly to US President Joe Biden's decision to cancel his re-election bid, criticizing his support for Israel during its genocidal war against Palestinians.

Reactions began pouring in on Monday after Biden announced on social media that he would not seek re-election in 2024.

This decision followed a poor performance in a debate with rival Donald Trump, raising questions about Biden's capability to serve another term.

The US Campaign for Palestinian Rights Action (USCPR) stated, “It was not Biden’s failed debate that showed he is unfit to lead. It was the tens of thousands of bombs he sent to kill Palestinian families.”

The group added that Biden had “repeatedly funded, armed, and backed Israel’s mass slaughter of the Palestinian people,” emphasizing that his legacy would always be marked by “genocide.”

Jeremy Scahill, co-founder of Drop Site and former journalist at The Intercept, wrote on X, “When I read the lionizing of Biden, emphasizing his decency and heroism, all I can think of is that little girl in Gaza whose jaw was blown off and all the other Palestinian children who were dismembered, burned alive, murdered with US weapons in a war Joe Biden facilitated.”

The USCPR referred to the US's ongoing arms support for Israel during its genocidal war, which has resulted in nearly 39,000 deaths and around 90,000 injuries.

Author and activist Owen Jones also criticized Biden, stating, “Israel would never have been able to raze Gaza to the ground without him.” He described Biden as “a monster who belongs in jail” and said, “...if hell exists, that man would have a first class ticket there.”

Human rights campaigner Sophie McNeill echoed the sentiments, urging the next Democratic nominee to end support for “this criminal war.”
