UN Marks Int’l Day of Democracy with Focus on AI’s Role in Upholding Democratic Values

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United Nations is using this year's International Day of Democracy to emphasize the importance of protecting free speech, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

With more than 50 countries – representing half of the global population – set to hold elections this year, the UN underscores the urgency of preserving accountable institutions and promoting human rights.

Yet, these values are under increasing threat globally. Freedoms are being eroded, civic spaces are shrinking, polarization is rising, and public mistrust in institutions is deepening.

The 2024 Democracy Day theme focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on good governance. The UN warned that, without proper regulation, AI could pose significant risks to democracy, peace, and stability. Concerns include the proliferation of misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and deepfakes.

However, the UN also acknowledged AI’s potential to strengthen democratic processes by promoting public participation, equality, and human development. AI can foster greater engagement in decision-making processes and create more inclusive civic spaces where individuals can hold decision-makers accountable.

To harness these benefits, effective governance of AI is essential, and the UN stressed the importance of cooperation at both national and international levels.

The UN's High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, which includes experts from various regions, has released a report offering recommendations on how to mitigate AI's risks while maximizing its potential for good governance.

The message is clear: AI must be developed and deployed in ways that serve humanity equitably and safely.

The upcoming UN Summit of the Future provides a key opportunity to strengthen international collaboration, build trust, and protect both present and future generations from the potential harms of emerging technologies.

On this International Day of Democracy, the UN called for continued efforts to build a more inclusive, just, and equal world, ensuring that democratic values remain strong in the face of modern challenges.
