Russia Condoles Death of Iranians in Plane Crash

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russian President Vladimir Putin offered condolences to his Iranian counterpart over the death of dozens of people on board a plane that crashed in Tehran on Sunday morning.

In a message published on the Kremlin website on Sunday, Putin expressed his sympathy with President Hassan Rouhani and the bereaved families of victims of the fatal crash.

“Accept my sincere condolences over the crash of a passenger plane over Tehran and the numerous human casualties. I ask that my words of sympathy and support be passed to those who lost their family and friends in the catastrophe,” the Russian leader said.

The Antonov An-140 (Iran-140) aircraft belonging to a domestic airlines crashed in a residential area in the west of the capital, Tehran, on Sunday morning.

It was destined for the eastern city of Tabas, but crashed shortly after take-off from the Mehrabad Airport. At least 39 passengers have been killed so far. No information is available on the cause of the crash.

The Antonov An-140 commercial passenger airplane is a twin-engine turbojet aircraft, which can accommodate up to 100 passengers.

After purchasing the production license for the An-140 from Ukraine in 2000, Iran built its first Iran-140 passenger plane in 2003.
