Barzani: Iran KRG's Tough Time Friend
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - President of the Iraqi Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani commended Iran for assisting the Kurds in dealing with the tough conditions the semi-autonomous region is now facing.
Barzani, in a letter to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, praised the bilateral relations and cooperation between Tehran and Arbil, saying the Islamic Republic has remained a friend and supporter of the Iraqi Kurds in difficult days, Iraq’s Nahreen News Agency reported.
"I am sure that cooperation and friendly ties and mutual cooperation will strengthen co-existence and bonds between Iran and the Iraqi Kurdistan region," said Barzani.
Kurdish media reports say Tehran has provided the Iraqi Kurdistan region with humanitarian assistance after the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants launched an offensive against the Arab country.
Meanwhile, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi troops continue to clash with the ISIL terrorists in northern Iraq.
Kurdish officials said Peshmerga forces had recently managed to drive the ISIL terrorists out of the towns of Guwair and Makhmur in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh.
