Iran Wins Wrestling World Cup for Fourth Time in Row

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian national wrestling team claimed the title of the 2015 Freestyle Wrestling World Cup for the fourth time in a row on Monday.

The Iranian team overpowered Azerbaijan 7-1 to book a place in the final match.

Team Melli then beat USA 5-3 at the Forum in Los Angeles.

Iran had already defeated Belarus 8-0 and Turkey 7-1 in the event.

Azerbaijan topped Russia by criteria for third place. The two teams were deadlocked at 4-4 and classification points were tied at 15-15 sending the match to technical points, which Azerbaijan won 34-28.

Belarus defeated Mongolia 5-3 for fifth place and Cuba defeated Turkey 5-3 for seventh place.

The Wrestling World Cup has been conducted every year since the 1973 tournament. The World Cup began as a dual-meet competition for the top teams on each continent, but now features the top teams in the rankings of the previous year's world championships.
