More Americans Dissatisfied with Treatment of Blacks in US: Poll
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - US citizens of different racial backgrounds are increasingly dissatisfied with the way African-Americans are treated in the United States, according to a new poll released by Gallup.
The results of the Gallup poll come as the national spotlight has been cast on race relations and racial inequality amid numerous incidents of police brutality and killings primarily, but not exclusively, of African Americans.
“Americans' satisfaction with the way blacks are treated has declined to a new low in Gallup's 15-year trend, now at 49 percent. This is a sharp drop from two years ago, when 62 percent were satisfied.”
According to the poll, reported by Sputnik News on Wednesday, some 33 percent of African-Americans said they were satisfied by the way they are treated in the United States, a 14 percent drop from 2013.
Meanwhile, 53 percent of whites said they were satisfied, compared to 67 percent in 2013, while the dissatisfaction among Hispanics has fallen from 61 percent to 44 in 2015.
The poll also showed an increase in the respondent’s perception in 2015 of how African-Americas are treated in dealing with police, on the job, in neighborhood stores and in public places compared to 2013.
“This decline has occurred even though blacks themselves are no more likely than two years ago to report being treated unfairly in various situations because of their race, including dealing with the police.”
Over the past year, President Barack Obama has launched several policy initiatives in the wake of renewed calls counter racial bias in the country. The initiatives include investing in police body-worn cameras for law enforcement agencies and a plan for addressing segregation in US neighborhoods.
