Top Iranian Adviser Scorns Saudi Talk of Military Action in Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A senior military adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described Saudi Arabia’s announcement of readiness to take military action in Syria as an empty boast.
Addressing a rally in the city of Hamedan on Thursday, Major General Seyed Yahya Rahim Safavi said the Al Saud’s decision to deploy ground forces to Syria is nothing but a “stupid propaganda maneuver.”
If Saudi Arabia had had any ability, it would have made advances in Yemen, the military official added, referring to the Saudi-led aggression against Yemen that has been going on for some 11 months.
The comments came after Riyadh voiced readiness to participate in any ground operations in Syria if the US-led coalition purportedly targeting terrorists decides to start such operations.
Saudi Arabia is a member of the so-called US-led coalition that has been conducting air raids against what are claimed to be the Daesh (ISIL) terrorists inside Syria without any authorization from the Syrian government or a UN mandate since September 2014.
Elsewhere in his comments, Major General Rahim Safavi referred to Iran as the most powerful country in West Asia.
He also noted that an anti-terrorism coalition, comprised of Iran, Russia, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, is winning victories, and reminded the US that the Islamic Revolution’s might determines equations in the region in favor of the axis of resistance.
He made the remarks in the gathering of people taking part in mass demonstrations to celebrate the Islamic Revolution victory anniversary.
Iranian people attended countrywide rallies on Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution, which put an end to the monarchy of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in 1979.
