Security Tight Ahead of Sports Games in Tehran: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Security and intelligence forces have intensified preventive measures following the Wednesday terrorist attacks in Tehran, an official said, stressing that all preparations have been made for the home matches the national football and volleyball teams will play in coming days.

The situation in Tehran is completely normal and all security and intelligence forces are fully prepared, Mohsen Hamedani, deputy governor of Tehran Province for security affairs told Tasnim.

Pointing to “special” security measures in Tehran and tighter control of situation across the city in the wake of the twin terrorist attacks, Hamedani said special arrangements have been made for the upcoming games of the national football and volleyball teams.

Iran’s national football team is going to take on Uzbekistan on June 12 as part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Asian Qualifiers, while the national volleyball team’s home matches in the FIVB Volleyball World League 2017 will begin in Tehran on Friday.

The games will be held against a backdrop of the terrorist attacks in Tehran, claimed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

On Wednesday morning, terrorists launched simultaneous attacks on Iran’s parliament building in downtown Tehran and on the mausoleum of late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, south of the city.

According to officials, 12 people have been killed and 42 others wounded in the two incidents.
