Iran Urges Int'l Action against State-Sponsored Cyber Crimes

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian diplomat emphasized the necessity for international regulations to take legal proceedings against state-sponsored cyberattacks.

All governments should join hands to develop a clear definition of state-sponsored cyberattacks and cyber terrorism and to weigh up plans to take legal action against those crimes and determine who should compensate for the damage caused by such attacks, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi said in a conference on preventing and fighting cyber-crimes, held in Tehran on Wednesday.

Due to their complicated nature, cybercrimes have crossed many borders and have taken new shapes that did not exist until a few years ago, he noted, bemoaning the lack of any international comprehensive document on cybercrimes.

Highlighting Iran’s measures to tackle cyber-related crimes, Araqchi pointed to ratification of laws on cyber-crimes in Iran, establishment of a cyber police department, and formation of a national cyberspace center.

He also noted that the Foreign Ministry’s Legal and International Affairs department has established a specialized task force to deal with cybercrimes and has actively participated in UN expert meetings in this regard.

Last year, Iran’s Civil Defense Organization unveiled plans for developing a nationwide alarm system that would alert the country’s organizations to possible cyberattacks.

It came after a spate of cyberattacks against Iranian websites in June 2016.
