Rallies Continue in West Bank in Solidarity with Gazans

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Dozens of Palestinians staged a protest rally in the West Bank city of Ramallah to condemn sanctions imposed by the Palestinian Authority (PA) against the Gaza Strip and voice their support for the people living in the enclave.

During the demonstration held in Ramallah on Tuesday, the Palestinians called for immediate implementation of the Palestinian National Council’s decisions about the salary ranges of employees in the Gaza Strip.

The demonstrators carried placards stressing the need to completely lift the PA’s sanctions on the Gazans.

Hassan Kharisha, a Palestinian lawmaker who had attended the rally, called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, to immediately end the sanctions, the Arabic-language Palestine al-Yawm reported.

Abu Mazen should not think that the sanctions can pressure the Gazans into stopping their support for the Palestinian Resistance groups because Gaza has always stood up against the Israeli occupation, he stated.

On Sunday, Palestinians in the West Bank had held a similar demonstration calling on Abbas to lift the punitive sanctions.

Abu Mazen has imposed a series of punitive measures against the Gaza Strip, halting salary payments to thousands of government employees and refusing to pay for the strip’s electricity in an attempt to mount pressure on Hamas.

The sanctions have infuriated the people of Gaza -inhabited by some 1.8 million residents- who already suffer from harsh humanitarian conditions, power outages, and insufficient water and food stuff.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior spokesman for Hamas, has praised the popular demonstration in Ramallah, describing it as a step in the right path.
