Iranian Defense Minister, Yemeni Envoy Meet in Tehran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami and Yemeni Ambassador to Tehran Ibrahim Mohamed al-Dailami held talks in the Iranian capital on issues of mutual interest.
During the Sunday meeting, Brigadier General Hatami and Dailami exchanged views about a range of issues, including ways to boost military cooperation between the two countries.
The Iranian defense minister stressed the need to boost ties between the Iranian and Yemeni militaries and said that Tehran backs a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
The Yemeni ambassador expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Republic over Tehran’s stance against the Saudi-led war on the Arabian Peninsula country.
Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by the coalition for about five years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
Official UN figures say that more than 15,000 people have been killed in Yemen since the Saudi-led bombing campaign began.
The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 91,000 lives.
The Saudi war has impacted over seven million children in Yemen who now face a serious threat of famine, according to UNICEF figures. Over 6,000 children have either been killed or sustained serious injuries since 2015, UN children’s agency said. The humanitarian situation in the country has also been exacerbated by outbreaks of cholera, polio, and measles.
