US Suffers Unprecedented Isolation after UNSC’ Vote: Iranian Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the country’s active diplomacy and the legal robustness of the JCPOA made the US face unprecedented isolation at the UN after the Security Council rejected Washington’s bid to extend an arms embargo on Iran.
In a post on his Twitter account on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said, “It has been unprecedented in the 75-years history of the United Nations that the US would become isolated to such an extent.”
He said the US could convince only a tiny country to vote in favor of its resolution in spite of a whole host of visits, pressures and attempts.
“Last night, Iran’s active diplomacy together with the JCPOA’s legal robustness defeated the US for the umpteenth time at the Security Council,” Mousavi added.
The UN Security Council on Friday resoundingly rejected a US bid to extend a global arms embargo on Iran.
In the vote, Washington got support only from the Dominican Republic for its resolution to indefinitely extend the arms embargo on Iran, leaving it far short of the minimum nine "yes" votes required for adoption.
Eleven members on the 15-member body, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, abstained.
Russia and China strongly opposed extending the 13-year ban, which is due to expire on October 18 under a 2015 nuclear deal signed between Iran and six world powers.
