Diplomats Discuss Promotion of Iran-Afghanistan Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to Kabul and Afghanistan’s top diplomat weighed plans for the expansion of political, economic and cultural relations between the two neighbors.

In a meeting in Kabul, the Iranian envoy, Bahador Aminian, and caretaker of the Foreign Ministry of Afghanistan Hanif Atmar discussed a broad range of issues, including ways to enhance the economic, political and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

They also talked about the regional consensus on the peace process in Afghanistan, release of inmates held by the Kabul government and the Taliban, reduction of tensions and establishment of an immediate ceasefire, start of talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, and constant support for the Islamic Republic system in Afghanistan.

In the meeting, the Iranian ambassador reaffirmed Tehran’s support for the Afghan peace process.

Aminian also highlighted the importance of a railroad route connecting Iran’s Khaf to Afghanistan’s Herat, and pointed to the opportunities available for closer cooperation between the two states.

In a telephone conversation with President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani earlier in August, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed Tehran’s support for the peace process in Afghanistan under the guidance of the Kabul government, hoping that the intra-Afghan negotiations would yield results with the inclusion of all Afghan groups.
