Iran Raps G7 Statement for Linking Missile Program to UNSC Resolution
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry denounced a joint statement by the Group of Seven for the allegation that Tehran’s missile program is inconsistent with the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, advising the G7 leaders to honor their commitments instead of interfering in the other countries.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh rejected the allegations raised by the G7 statement about Tehran’s missile capabilities.
In their joint statement on Sunday, the G7 leaders called on Iran to stop all ballistic missile activities and proliferation which they said are inconsistent with UNSCR 2231.
In response, Khatibzadeh said such interpretation of the UNSC Resolution 2231 is “quite incorrect” and far from reality.
“Nowhere in the (UNSC) resolution (2231) have Iran’s missile programs been restricted,” he emphasized.
The spokesman said such wrong interpretation of the UNSC resolution would only discredit those who raise anti-Iran claims.
“The leaders of those countries (G7) had better honor their unfulfilled commitments and stop interfering in the affairs of the other countries,” Khatibzadeh stated.
Resolution 2231, passed in July 2015 to endorse the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), calls on Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”
Tehran insists its missile tests and rocket launches do not breach any UN resolution because they are solely for defense purposes and not designed to carry nuclear warheads.
