Iran, Iraq’s KRG to Boost Bilateral Trade Cooperation: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will expand mutual cooperation in the field of trade, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Free Trade-Industrial and Special Economic Zone said.

Hojjatollah Abdolmaleki made the remarks Wednesday in an interview with NRT TV Network on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of the Exclusive Exhibition of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sulaymaniyah of Iraq.

Iran’s free trade-industrial and special economic zones are hosting investors of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, he noted.

Expounding on the advantages of Baneh and Marivan free zones, Abdolmaleki described the free zones as a very good platform for strengthening cooperation between traders, merchants, entrepreneurs and investors of Iraq’s Kurdistan region with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Establishing joint free zones with the neighboring states is a major approach of the Secretariat of the Supreme Council of Free Trade-Industrial and Special Economic Zones taken in the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi.

Speaking with the consul general of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Irbil province of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government, Abdolmaleki emphasized that the launch of joint free zones with Iraq’s Kurdistan region is one of the strategic measures taken in the current administration in line with boosting trade exchanges between the two countries.

Senior officials at Iraq’s Kurdistan region are very keen to set up a joint free zone with Iran, he added.
