Constructing Aghband Bridge on Aras River Begins at Iran-Azerbaijan Border

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The concrete-mixing operations for constructing the strategic Aghband Bridge on the Aras River kicked off on Friday in the presence of Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash and Azerbaijan Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

As a passageway between Iran, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Aghband Bridge will be constructed on the Aras River.

Bazrpash, who has traveled to the Republic of Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of constructing Aghband Bridge said, “According to plans, this bridge will be constructed and put into operation in a year.”

A memorandum of understanding will also be inked between the two countries regarding the construction operation of a bridge for a railway on the river.

Based on the agreement made, the volume of frequenting vehicles will double and reach 2,000/day following an increase in the customs-infrastructures at Astara, Bilesavar and Poldasht terminals, Bazrpash, who is also the co-chairman of the Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Commission, said.

During the ceremony, both co-chairs highlighted the significance of the road bridge and border-customs infrastructures and their role in enhancing transit cargo transportation between the two nations and streamlining travel to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The road bridge, which will have seven lanes, is expected to have a considerable effect on trade and logistics. It is estimated that the facility will be able to handle at least 1,100 freight vehicles daily, thereby easing the movement of goods and people across the border.
