Iran Produces 4 mln Tons of Greenhouse Products Annually: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s deputy minister of agriculture for horticultural affairs said four million tons of quality greenhouse products are produced in the country annually.

Iran is equipped with the most modern greenhouse units that are equal to and in some cases better than modern European ones, Mohammad Mehdi Boroumandi stated.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the largest greenhouse unit of the country in Zanjan province, he said that the development of greenhouse units in the country is one of the important programs of the ministry.

Effective steps have been taken for commercializing and boosting the quality of greenhouse units in the country, the deputy minister of agriculture added.

He drew a comparison between the development of greenhouse units before and after the Islamic Revolution and said greenhouse structures were imported into the country before the revolution but presently, Iran assists other countries in the development of greenhouses, which is a source of pride, IRNA reported.

He referred to the newly-constructed greenhouse unit in this province, which was inaugurated in the presence of President Ebrahim Raisi during the celebrations marking the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, and noted that the most modern greenhouse unit in Zanjan province is ready to produce 15,000 tons of the greenhouse products annually with the aim of exporting the products abroad.

Boroumandi put the current number of greenhouse units in the country at 25,700.

The deputy minister of agriculture also pointed to the development of medicinal plants in Iran and said the country is home to 2,300 species of medicinal plants.

The current administration has paid due attention to the development of medicinal plants in the country, he added.

He put the current financial turnover of medicinal plants in the world at about $200 billion.
